Item Description

What is Guild Wars 2?

Guild Wars 2 is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by ArenaNet and published by NCsoft. Set in the fantasy world of Tyria, the game follows the re-emergence of Destiny's Edge, a disbanded guild dedicated to fighting the Elder Dragons, a Lovecraftian species that has seized control of Tyria in the time since the original Guild Wars. The game takes place in a persistent world with a story that progresses in instanced environments.

Guild Wars 2 claims to be unique in the genre by featuring a storyline that is responsive to player actions, something which is common in single player role-playing games but rarely seen in multiplayer ones. A dynamic event system replaces traditional questing, utilising the ripple effect to allow players to approach quests in different ways as part of a persistent world. Also of note is the combat system, which aims to be more dynamic than its predecessor by promoting synergy between professions and using the environment as a weapon, as well as reducing the complexity of the Magic-style skill system of the original game.

What are Gems?

Gems are the in-game currency required to purchase things from the Gem Store. Gems may be bought with real-world money or in-game gold and spent to get convenience items, account services, or decorative items.

Gameplay Options:

Player versus Environment

In Guild Wars 2 PvE game play follows a story which leads the character through the world, replacing the campaign and mission system from the original Guild Wars. The storyline is personalized based on the character's race, profession and biography questions answered during character creation and branches based on some decisions made by the player during game play.

Much of the personal story takes place in solo instances for the character, but other players can be invited to take part in their story. The story instances scale in difficulty with the number of players participating.

Each character also has a home instance which updates as the player advances through the personal story and the world. The player can invite other players to see their home instance.

Player versus Player

Player versus Player (PvP) is a game mode where a player participates in competitive gaming against other humans (as opposed to co-operative).

The following PvP modes are available in Guild Wars 2:

  •     Structured PvP
  •     World versus World
  •     Some activities

To join PvP with a friend, either
right-click their name in the party list or guild list and select, "Join Friend in PvP".
talk to the PvP Channel NPC in the Hall of Memories. Any channel which contains a friend has an icon beside it.

Will there be a subscription fee?

No. There is no monthly subscription fee. Once you purchase the box or a game key, you are free to play as much as you want.

Will there be micro-transactions or things to buy which don't come with the game?

Yes. The game includes micro-transactions via the Gem Shop.

Items that can be purchased via the gem shop are cosmetic, intended to provide a convenience or are account services, such as adding character & bag slots.

Gem shop items will not offer any substantial gameplay advantage over those available through the investment of time. You will also be able to trade coin, earned in-game, for gems that other players spent cash to buy.

Can I transfer a Guild Wars character to Guild Wars 2?

No, character transfers between the games are not possible.

However, you can reserve your existing Guild Wars character names for use in Guild Wars 2
